The practice of using prescription drugs aimed at healing and managing illnesses and conditions in Atlanta is not uncommon. When consumers begin taking a prescription medicine, they may be lulled into a false sense of security simply by the popularity of the drug. Many believe that it stands to reason that if a large number of people are using the drug, it must be safe.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The number one selling prescription medicine in the world is currently at the center of a large number of products liability lawsuits. Lipitor, a drug aimed at decreasing a person’s risk of heart disease and lowering cholesterol is a prescription statin medication that has sales of over $130 billion.
Despite its popularity, there are currently 56 lawsuits in the United States against Pfizer, the manufacturer of Lipitor. These lawsuits have been brought by women who claim that they developed Type 2 diabetes after taking the drug. They report that the company did not warn consumers of this possibility. Many say that had they known of this risk, they would have never taken the medication to begin with. Lawyers for the women say that the company should have known about these possible side effects after research was done in 2004 that showed a link between statins and insulin resistance.
Consumers have the right to have all the known potential side effects disclosed to them in order to make an informed decision concerning the benefits of using the drug outweighing the risks. Because these women were not warned, they may be entitled to compensation for the harm they suffered as a result.
