Driving while you are sleepy in Fulton County, Georgia is never a good idea, but it can be especially dangerous for truck drivers. This is why federal regulations do not allow a truck driver to drive more than 11 hours during a shift. In some instances, drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence. Being sleepy can slow reaction times and impair judgment much the same way as alcohol affects the brain.
A 35-year-old Georgia truck driver is being charged with vehicular homicide and four counts of assault by auto following a fatal accident in New Jersey recently. The driver is suspected of being awake for more than 24 hours when the crash occurred. This goes against federal regulations.
Comedian James McNair was killed and comedian Tracy Morgan was critically injured in the crash. Morgan was hospitalized with a broken leg and nose and a number of broken ribs. The 45-year-old will likely require several weeks to recover in the hospital.
The Walmart truck driver was arrested following the crash but posted the $50,000 bond. Walmart issued a statement saying that they believed the driver was within federal regulations when the crash occurred, but that they were cooperating with authorities who are investigating the accident.
Those who were injured in this accident as well as family members of the man who died may wish to consult with an attorney experienced in person injury. A lawyer can advise them concerning their right to compensation for their medical expenses and funeral costs.
