What Should You Look For If Your Child Swallows A Toy Part?

Children are curious and often get into things that they shouldn’t. This can include accidentally breaking off and swallowing toy parts. Since this can pose major health problems to your child, you should be on the lookout for several symptoms and take action immediately.

There are a number of symptoms that may surface after your child swallows a toy part. The American Family Physician states any of the following may occur:

  • Vomiting or gagging
  • Excessive drooling
  • Refusal to eat
  • Wheezing or coughing
  • Stomach or throat pains

Additionally, if your child’s airway has been blocked, they will require immediate medical attention. If you are properly trained in CPR, you should quickly and safely follow the steps to attempt to dislodge the object. If you attempt to do this without training, you risk causing further damage including broken ribs. You should also get to the emergency room or doctor immediately.

However, a swallowed object does not always come with noticeable side effects. Even if your child isn’t showing any signs of distress, they should still be taken to the doctor just so the item can be properly identified as harmless. For example, certain items such as metal pieces may not cause initial damage, but they should still be removed immediately in order to avoid internal cuts.

Quick reaction time can make all of the difference in this situation. By paying attention to your child and acting as soon as you believe something is wrong, you lower the risk of permanent or serious damage.
