Piedmont Healthcare has admitted that the equipment used for colonoscopies at the Piedmont West Surgery Center was not properly sterilized as far back as 2011. This error in the sterilization process has put hundreds if not thousands of patients at risk of contracting infections including but not limited to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It has been reported that Piedmont Healthcare has notified 456 patients but that approximately 17,000 patients had colonoscopies performed during the relevant time period where the sterilization procedures were not followed.
Piedmont Healthcare is offering free counseling and testing for the various infections.
Patients who had colonoscopies at Piedmont West Surgery since 2011, regardless of whether they have been contacted by Piedmont Healthcare, should consult with legal counsel to determine their legal remedies for being placed at risk by Piedmont’s admitted negligence.
