Handling Icy Working Conditions To Minimize Injury

Georgia is known for its hot Southern weather, but it can get its share of snow and ice in the winter, too. However, because this severe cold weather is less common, employees may not know what they should do to handle icy working environments.

The first thing a person should do is understand how to safely walk on ice. A guide is provided by the University of Illinois which highlights tips such as traveling on the grass when possible. If ice cannot be avoided, the person walking should bend slightly and keep a slow and consistent speed. Additionally, people should avoid walking with their hands in their pockets. If they do slip, they will be unable to break their fall if their hands are not free.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also lists preventative measures that can be applied in work situations. This includes putting down sand or salt on icy areas of the ground, as well as frequently shoveling any snow that builds up on the walking paths. Setting up cautionary signs may also help. It is also suggested that employers talk to their employees about safe winter wear, such as shoes with sturdy soles. Shoes with a strong grip on the bottom will latch onto ice better, lowering the chances of slipping.

Accidents that involve falling on the ice are no joke. However, by following these methods, workers will be able to keep themselves much safer during the winter by minimizing their chances of slipping and falling.
