Are There Any Autumn Driving Hazards You Should Be Aware Of?

For millions of people across the country, fall is the best time of year. The reprieve from the summer heat, the stunning autumn foliage and the upcoming holiday season are things to look forward to. However, there are aspects to driving in the fall that may be dangerous for Georgia residents. Any number of these factors may result in a car crash and serious injury.

As the weather changes, so do road conditions. There are also changes to traffic in the fall, as children go back to school and people travel during the holidays. Esurance has provided a list of the most common driving hazards you might face on the road this fall. These may include:

  • Morning and evening sun glare making it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians, bicycles and nearby traffic
  • Slick road surfaces from early-morning frost, rain and fallen leaves
  • Reduced visibility and headlight glare from fog
  • Deer migration patterns in the fall resulting in more of the animals venturing onto roadways

How can you avoid getting into an accident caused by any of the above situations? When the weather is foggy or wet, it is safer to reduce your speed and give other vehicles plenty of room. You should never use your high beams in fog, which may increase glare. Respect school bus laws, and be extra vigilant during the hours before and after school. Avoid slowing or stopping to admire the autumn scenery, and watch out for other drivers doing the same – you may be surprised by how often this occurs.

You may still be involved in an accident this fall as the result of a negligent driver’s actions, no matter how carefully you drive. This information is meant to prepare you for seasonal traffic hazards, but should not be taken as legal advice.
